History

A big thank you to Andrew Harris for his long service to Aldeburgh, our charity & for providing the history below.

Aldeburgh United Charities was formed on 20th May 1914 and in March 1980 was registered and approved formally by the Charity Commission.   The Charity was formed from 9 existing Aldeburgh Charities:

The Charity of Captain William Covell

The Charity of Captain William Lawes

The Eleemosynary Charity of Captain Thomas Chinery

The Eleemosynary Charity of the Reverend Thomas Emly

The Maule Coal Charity

The Poor’s Land

The Slaughden Quay Trust

The William Skeet Coal Charity

The William Frederic Thompson Scholarship Trust

The Charity is run by seven Trustees.  2 ex-officio Trustees being the Vicar of the Aldeburgh Parish and The Mayor of Aldeburgh for the time being.

The remaining 5 Trustees being appointed by the Town Council of Aldeburgh and serving a term of 4 years.

The Aldeburgh Untitled Charities have a rich and interesting history. They were established in Aldeburgh, a coastal town in Suffolk, England, with the aim of supporting various charitable causes in the local community.

The charities are run by a dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds and distribute them to those in need. Over the years, the Aldeburgh Untitled Charities have supported a wide range of causes, including local schools, food pantry, healthcare facilities, community projects, and individuals facing financial hardships.

One of the notable aspects of the Aldeburgh Untitled Charities is their annual fundraising events, which is a highlight of the town’s social calendar. This event brings the community together and includes activities such as charity auctions, live performances, and various games and stalls.

The funds raised through these events and other initiatives are then dispersed to the selected beneficiaries through a rigorous evaluation process. The charities prioritize projects that have a positive and lasting impact on the community, ensuring that the funds are used effectively.

The Aldeburgh Untitled Charities have played a vital role in improving the lives of many individuals and contributing to the overall well-being of the community. They continue to be an important pillar of support and a testament to the generosity and compassion of the people of Aldeburgh.

So far this year we have been able to help families experiencing poverty at Christmas to have a better time, donating £2000 in food vouchers.

We also helped a pupil at the primary school go on a trip to London their parents couldn’t afford.

We also supported a family who for mental health problems found themselves without means to food or support.

We have committed to helping the local playgroup keep going which is a great voluntary team in the town.

We have lots more to do.
